چکیده

Raman scattering from binary GexSe1−x glasses under hydrostatic pressure shows onset of a steady increase in the frequency of modes of corner-sharing GeSe4 tetrahedral units when the external pressure P exceeds a threshold value Pc. The threshold pressure Pcsxd decreases with x in the 0.15,x,0.20 range, nearly vanishes in the 0.20,x,0.25 range, and then increases in the 0.25,x,1/3 range. These Pcsxd trends closely track those in the nonreversing enthalpy, DHnrsxd, near glass transitions sTgsd, and in particular, both DHnrsxd and Pcsxd vanish in the reversibility window s0.20,x,0.25d. It is suggested that Pc provides a measure of stress at the Raman-active units, and its vanishing in the reversibility window suggests that these units are part of an isostatically rigid backbone. Isostaticity also accounts for the nonaging behavior of glasses observed in the reversibility window.

Optical characterization of BK7 borosilicate glasses containing different amounts of CeO2

Borosilicate BK7 glasses doped with different amounts of CeO2 (0.5,1,1.5%) were prepared by the convenient melting process in this work. DTA analysis proved that 0.5-1% CeO2 has a network modifier role and then up to 1.5% it shows network former role. For structural studies, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy were carried out. Fermi energy level, direct/ indirect optical band gap and Urbach energy wer...

Fast-track communication Meeting experimental challenges to physics of network glasses: Assessing the role of sample homogeneity

We introduce a Raman profiling method to track homogenization of GexSe100−x melts in real time, and show that 2 g melts reacted at 950 °C in high vacuum homogenize in 168 h on a scale of 10μm. Homogenization of melts is precursive to self-organization of glasses. In the present glasses, compositional variation of Raman active corner-sharingmode frequency of GeSe4 units, molar volumes, and the en...

Infrared and Raman Spectroscopic Studies on mixed alkali tungsten based glasses

Quaternary tungstate glasses containing K2O, Na2O and B2O3 have been prepared by melt quench technique and studied by IR and Raman spectroscopy. Raman and infrared spectroscopy have been employed to investigate the (30−x)Na2O–xK2O–10WO3–60B2O 3 glasses in order to obtain information about the competitive role of WO3 and B2O3 in the formation of glass network. IR spectral study reveals the exist...

Self-organized criticality in the intermediate phase of rigidity percolation.

Experimental results for covalent glasses have highlighted the existence of a self-organized phase due to the tendency of glass networks to minimize internal stress. Recently, we have shown that an equilibrated self-organized two-dimensional lattice-based model also possesses an intermediate phase in which a percolating rigid cluster exists with a probability between zero and one, depending on ...

Effects of Valve Closing Law and Unsteady Friction Model on Damping Pressure Waves in a Network

Water-hammer is a transient condition which may occur in a network as a result of rapid or slow valve closures, pump failures, changes in turbine loading, etc. It creates high and low pressure waves which travel along the system and decay as a result of wall shear stress. Comparison o experimental and theoretical results revealed the failure of steady or quasi-steady models in correctly predict...
